*Hints to Young Soldiers.

  1. It is your duty, and the duty of every man in Australia, to assist in the

defence of Australia.

To do this you must be trained, and Australia requires that you should, by

the age of 26 years, have the following entries in your Record Book :

       Eleven (11) "EFFICIENTS”  or

Eleven (11) "annual exemptions” if, unfortunately, you live in a

place where you cannot be trained ; or

Eleven (11) of the two entries combined.

Criminals and Bad Characters are not permitted to serve in the Cadets or

Militia Forces (Section 141 of the Defence Act). It should, therefore, be a source

of pride to you, that you have been selected for training in the highest national

duty-the defence of your country.

  2. You are required by the Defence Act to undergo training

In the Senior Cadets, from 14 to 18 years; and

In the Militia Forces, from 18 to 26 years of age.

The training in the Senior Cadets commences on the 1st July of the year

in which you reach the age of 14, and continues therein until the 30th June of

the year in which you reach the age of 18. You will then be transferred to

the Militia Forces, and must serve in that Force until the 30th June of the year

in which you reach the age of 26 years.

  3. Parades for Senior Cadets are divided into two (2) classes Compulsory

and Alternative. Attendance at Compulsory Parades is obligatory, and failure

to attend is an offence, and will be dealt with as such by your Commanding

Officer. Alternative Parades are parades which are called by the Officer

Commanding, to enable you and your comrades to attain a higher standard of

military proficiency, and to afford you an opportunity of qualifying for

promotion.

  4. To be classified as Efficient in the Senior Cadets, you are required to attend

not less than the following Compulsory Parades each year:

        4 whole day drills

12 half day drills        (or such other Parades of equal duration as are

       24 quarter days or                                approved),

           night drills

AND TO ATTAIN A SUFFICIENT STANDARD OF EFFICIENCY.

* These hints serve only as outlines, and the proper Section of the Act and

Regulations should be referred to when more exact information is required.
